Objectives: Get to know the most common biliary conditions in children by categorizing them as obstructive or non-obstructive diseases. Present a diagnostic algorithm for the management of jaundice in the newborns, with particular emphasis on the distinction between biliary atresia and hepatocellular cholestasis. Present other causes of jaundice in older children, with emphasis on the imaging findings that aid in the diagnosis.
Methods or Background: We present a series of cholangiopathies and illustrate them with schemes, ultrasound, CT and MRI examinations from our archive.
Results or Findings: Cholangiopathies comprise a group of genetic and acquired diseases of the biliary tree affecting both the adult and pediatric populations and are responsible for up to 80% of the indications for pediatric liver transplantation.[1] Cholangiopathies can be divided into genetic/metabolic, infectious, immune-mediated, idiopathic, malignant, and other categories. However, in many cholangiopathies, more than one pathogenetic mechanism is at play.
Conclusion: Radiologists have a role in narrowing the diagnosis upon pediatric cholestasis. Hence, should be familiar with the most common causes of cholestasis in children, namely the clinical and imaging signs that suggest each of these entities.
