Nephrectomy, the surgical removal of a kidney, is a critical procedure performed in children for various conditions, most of the times related with tumors or congenital defects that led to a significant compromise of kidney function. Both open and laparoscopic approaches are widely used. The decision to opt for an open or laparoscopic approach depends on various factors, including the child's age, medical condition, the size and location of the affected kidney or tumor, and the surgeon's expertise.
We present a retrospective analysis of a 10-year experience of a tertiary pediatric hospital comparing open versus laparoscopic approaches to nephrectomy on non-oncological patients. The study aims to assess and compare patient characteristics, surgical time, hospital stay, morbility, and long-term complications associated with each surgical technique. A total of 62 patients were included in the study.
The findings underscore the potential benefits of adopting laparoscopic nephrectomy as the preferred surgical technique for selected patients in the context of nephrectomy, particularly when considering minimally invasive options for better patient outcomes and faster recovery.
In conclusion, laparoscopic approach seems to have some advantages comparing to open approach in non-oncological patients, however careful patient selection and surgeon expertise remain crucial in ensuring successful outcomes regardless the method.
