Background and aims: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is defined as a three-dimensional deformity of the spine characterized by a radiological Cobb angle ≥10º. Long-term quality of life (QoL) is often compromised in scoliosis. Our goal is to evaluate the QoL in patients with different severities of AIS.
Methods: Retrospective observational study including patients diagnosed with AIS in a Rehabilitation Service at a Pediatrics Hospital, between january 2012 and december 2013. Patients were divided in two groups based on scoliosis severity, low to moderate and moderate to severe. Patients were contacted by telephone in order to assess QoL using experimental version of of the revised questionnaire of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-22r). Data was analyzed by using SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0.
Results: 14 out of 38 patients, with a medium age of 21,3 years met the inclusion criteria. SRS-22r mean score was 3,84 ± 0,41. Patients with moderate to severe scoliosis (n=6) had a statistically significant lower score in SRS-22r (p=0.002) in addition to the domains of pain, function and self-image. Nevertheless, the self-image and mental health domains had the lowest scores in all groups (3,30± 0,61 and 3,80± 0,62). Disease progression and use of vest were not related with SRS-22r score.
Conclusions: Our results suggest that AIS severity may affect QoL in several dimensions as pain, function and self-image. Mental health is globally reduced in AIS patients, indicating the need to be aware in this domain with early psychological intervention.
