Introdução: ADHD is one of the most prevalent psychiatric diseases affecting children. Given that sometimes it is difficult to manage the disease with the currently available treatments, and the ongoing debate concerning the use of medication in the younger patients, it is important to find alternatives. Recent findings suggest an overlap between the neural regions related with the processing of musical rhythm and those involved in ADHD, explaining their difficulty with rhythm patterns ant time perception. These findings bring the question whether there is or not a therapeutic potential in music, approaching children with ADHD.
Objetivos: Our goal is to understand how can music help children struggling with the diagnosis of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), perceive the strength of the evidence supporting this approach and discriminate which children can benefit the most from music therapy;
Métodos: We conducted a non-systematic review of PubMed database literature using the following key words: “music”, “therapy” and “ADHD”.
Resultados: Several reports strongly support the potential of music in the approach of patients with ADHD diagnosis, with minimal side effects. There appear to be many good ways to apply this therapy, and in a variety of children’s everyday settings.
Conclusões: Music therapy seems to have an important role in ADHD treatment. Most children with this diagnosis would benefit from it, as it is very affordable and safe. Additional research should be made to access music effects on social deficits related with ADHD.
