Jaime Ernesto Salazar de Eça e Sousa: the Creator of Paediatrics in Portugal

Jaime Salazar de Sousa was born in 1871 in Lisbon. He was graduated in 1893 by Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa. In 1894 he became a surgeon of the emergency room by contest.  In the following year he was admitted at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where, for two years he studied Orthopaedics and Paediatrics with Phelps and Woodberry. Coming back to Portugal as a paediatrician and orthopaedics specialist he was given the outpatient paediatrics clinic in Hospital S. José a general hospital  in Lisbon. Later on he moved this clinic to Dona Estefânia children´s hospital and open a surgical and orthopaedics nursery.  He started to teach paediatrics even before the recognition of this specialty in the pregraduate course and also before he comes by nomination and competence the first Full Professor of Paediatrics and Orthopedics when Medical-Surgical School became a Medical Faculty in 1911. He was accomplishing with the idea defended by himself in the 15th International Congress of Medicine in Lisbon in 1906 were he was the Secretary of Paediatrics. In the closing ceremony he made a proposal – paediatrics should be taught in all medical schools all over the world. Also in 1918 when postgraduate medical specialties were created, teaching of paediatrics was up to him. Many famous names of Portuguese adult´s doctors came to Dona Estefânia to train paediatrics with Salazar de Sousa. He was a comprehensive doctor with skills also in the laboratory and anatomic table and a pioneer in some innovative techniques. He gave many lectures, talks and  conferences, published several papers and a book with his lessons. He is named  in medical encyclopedias  and his  represented in one of the 4 paintings of Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, ordered in 1905-1906 to be placed  in the Board Room of the Medical-Surgical School  building.
