Introduction: The development and generalization of multidetector CT imaging has led to an increase in accuracy and applications, resulting in an exponential growth in the number of examinations carried out in children and a consequent increase of ionizing radiation exposure in pediatric population. Several strategies of radiation protection have been developed, mainly based on justification and optimization of the exams, namely the ALARA concept. However, ALARA and its usefulness has recently been called into question.
Methods: A review of the recent literature regarding the debate “Should the ALARA concept and the Image Gently campaign be terminated?” is done.
Results: The arguments favourable and unfavourable to the application of this concept are presented.
